Racial / Scleral Melanosis

This is a benign paediatric condition that is commonly found in the Asian population. It becomes more obvious with increasing age and usually is bilateral.
It presents as black or grey-blue pigmentation in the scleral tissue. Histologically, it composed of dendritic melanocytes in the scleral and episcleral layers, but not in the conjunctival substantia propria. Therefore, the conjunctivas are freely mobile over the hyperpigmented spots.
